![]() he Cathedral Choir "St.George" of Novi Sad follows the rich tradition of Serbian church-singing societies from the region of Backa and Novi Sad, particularly the Cathedral Choir of Novi Sad (1939-1946) which ranked among the best choirs in the Serbian Orthodox Church when it was on the top of its career. The activities of the new Cathedral Choir started in 1987, when the Novi Sad Orthodox Church Commune became its patron. In October 1992, the ensemble was named "St. George". Members of the choir are pupils and students of music and amateur singers with certain experience in choral singing. Taking after the work concept of the above mentioned pre-war society, we would like "each liturgy in the Cathedral church to be a spiritual concert as well".The choir's current repertoire consists of Serbian, Russian and Bulgarian spiritual vocal music of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, but also compositions from the older tradition: Byzantine, Serbian medieval and later monophonic and Russian polyphonic music of the 17th century. Along with cultivating all forms of Orthodox church music, the choir is trying to stimulate Yugoslav composers to revive this musical genre by new works.
In addition to regular participation in services in the Cathedral church "St. George" with the blessing of His Eminence bishop of Backa Dr. Irinej Bulovic, this choir appears in many municipal and national events significant for the expansion of the Christian Orthodox and national culture
